“My body and my awareness of it, brings me into direct contact with the ordinary nature of the miraculous.” ~Rolf Gates
Sitting is one thing. An object in motion stays in motion. So sitting down is just step one. Now we do the hard thing…we bring our minds with us into the seat.
I am sitting, and I am aware that I am sitting.
To someone who is new to the practice of meditation, it might sound ridiculous. But try it on. Use it as a mantra. While sitting, even for one minute (let’s try for 2 today?) just let your mind repeat that phrase.
I am sitting, and I am aware that I am sitting.
In today’s recorded meditation (below) I will give you more to think about to help quiet your mind. In yoga we use the term “monkey mind”. The mind wants, no NEEDS to be busy. Planning, assessing, OBsessing, making lists, being important. And if you really listen to that monkey mind, even for a minute, _that_ is ridiculous. It’s nothing new and enlightening. It’s an old recording, set on repeat.
When we slow down, come to a stop, take a seat, and use a mantra like “I am sitting, and I am aware that I am sitting”, it’s like giving the monkey a banana. For that moment in time, he is happy, and the mind is a quiet place. When we notice he is getting busy again, we toss him another banana.
I am sitting, and I am aware that I am sitting.
In the quiet moments, while the monkey is in the corner, enjoying his banana, listen…is there a quiet intention forming?
And now the practice of yoga begins…
Namaste.
