The award winning TV writer Shonda Rhimes was accepting an award for being an African American Woman excelling in her field. Her response was, “I woke up this way.” Pretty sure she stole that from Beyonce, but it was a phenomenal speech. “I woke up with a vagina and beautiful brown skin. I don’t deserve an award for that.”
Her answer illustrates today’s focus…you woke up like this. I’m going deep here. I am talking about how you woke up on that very first day, your BIRTH day. You were like this. You just forgot.
You were innocent. You were vulnerable. You were precious. You were open. You were a million possibilities. You were YOU. And then life happened.
Each lesson, each hardship, each accomplishment, each experience, each relationship has shaped you into the person you see today when you look in the mirror. Consider that very little of that is the real you. Consider that you wear a mask…many masks in fact. You play a role, many roles, and are an actor on the stage of your own life. You are the lead actor. Today, let’s look at where the real you shows up, the one who was like this on the very first day. And let’s look at who shows up as a result of all these layers that life has piled on.
In today’s meditation, all we have to do…is remember.
And now the practice of yoga begins…
Namaste.
