You often say, “I would give but only to the deserving.” The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pastures. They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish. ~Kahlil Gibran
Close your fist tightly.
Imagine holding onto something tightly, something you don’t want to lose. There is a sense of security in this holding tightly, but there is also a constriction, a discomfort. This holding on holds us back.
Now imagine loosening the grip, and holding what you treasure in an open hand.
Now you can look at it, see it in open space, and possibly, give it away…
With a closed hand, you cannot give, but you cannot receive either. It’s like being thirsty, and cupping your hand to hold cool, clear wate
r. If you try to hold the water by squeezing your hand around it, it will be squeezed out. By loosely holding it, it is yours. Your thirst can be quenched.
“The real and lasting practice for each of us is to remove what obstructs us so that we can be who we are, holding nothing back. If we can work toward this kind of authenticity, then the living kindness – the water of compassion – will naturally flow. We do not need discipline to be kind, just an open heart.” ~Mark Nepo
**May we walk through this day with an open heart, and an open hand.**
